Automobile Repair and Maintenance Jobs in Japan

By IshanSeptember 19, 2026Updated:October 3, 202608 Mins Read

Japan has around 80 million registered vehicles and one of the strictest vehicle inspection systems in the world. Every car must pass a periodic roadworthiness inspection, known as shaken, and most owners also have their vehicles serviced regularly. That creates steady work for thousands of repair shops across the country, and many of them are struggling to find young mechanics.

Automobile repair and maintenance is therefore one of the fields under the Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) visa. For Indians with ITI training in motor vehicles or diesel mechanics, an automobile diploma or hands-on workshop experience, it is a strong match. Even better, Japan drives on the left with right-hand-drive cars, just like India, so the basic vehicle layout will feel familiar.

This article explains the work you would do, the tests and qualifications involved, the requirements for employers, indicative pay and how to grow your career as a mechanic in Japan.

What Mechanics Do in Japanese Workshops

SSW workers in this field focus on inspection and maintenance of passenger cars, trucks and other vehicles. Typical tasks include:

  • Daily and periodic inspections, including preparation for the shaken inspection
  • Disassembly and reassembly maintenance of engines, brakes, steering and suspension
  • Replacing oil, filters, belts, tyres, batteries and brake pads
  • Using diagnostic scanners to read fault codes on modern vehicles
  • Recording inspection results accurately in the required formats
  • Related tasks such as washing vehicles or simple parts ordering, as long as they support your main repair work

Japanese workshops place great value on careful, step-by-step work and accurate records. Shortcuts that might be tolerated in some garages at home are not accepted, because inspection results carry legal weight.

Tests and Qualifications for SSW (i)

To enter on SSW (i), you generally need:

  1. The automobile repair and maintenance skills evaluation test, which covers vehicle structure, inspection procedures, tools, safety and basic maintenance work. In some cases, a pass in Japan’s Grade 3 automobile mechanic examination may also be accepted.
  2. Japanese language – JLPT N4 or above, or JFT-Basic.

The skills test has been held in Japan and in some other countries, and schedules change. Check the official test organiser’s notices for rounds accessible to Indian candidates. Those who have completed Technical Intern Training (ii) in automobile maintenance are usually exempt from the tests.

The mechanic qualification ladder

Japan has a national system of automobile mechanic qualifications, with Grade 3, Grade 2 and Grade 1 levels. SSW workers are encouraged to study for these after arrival. Grade 3 is a common first goal, and Grade 2 is the standard qualification for experienced mechanics who sign off inspection work. Earning these qualifications increases your pay, your responsibilities and your options for moving to SSW (ii).

Which Indian Backgrounds Fit Best?

Indian qualification or experience How it helps in Japan
ITI Mechanic Motor Vehicle Strong base in engines, transmission and chassis; matches most SSW tasks
ITI Mechanic Diesel Useful for trucks and commercial vehicles
Diploma in Automobile Engineering Theory knowledge helps with the skills test and later mechanic grades
Authorised service centre experience Familiarity with scheduled servicing, diagnostic tools and record-keeping
Auto electrician experience Valuable as cars become more electronic, hybrid and electric

Japan has many hybrid vehicles on the road, and electric vehicles are growing. If you can, learn the basics of hybrid systems, high-voltage safety and electronic diagnostics before you go.

A Typical Day in the Workshop

Most workshops open in the morning with a short meeting to assign the day’s vehicles and remind staff of safety points. Work is often organised by booking: a customer’s car arrives for shaken preparation, a periodic check or a repair, and a mechanic follows a fixed checklist from start to finish. Busy seasons come around year-end and before spring, when many inspections fall due and people prepare for travel. Breaks are fixed, the workshop is kept spotless, and tools are returned to their exact places at the end of the day. Overtime is common in peak months and is paid separately.

Rules for Employers in This Field

Not every garage can hire SSW workers. Employers in this field generally need to be officially certified automobile repair businesses under Japan’s road transport rules, and must join the industry council set up by the transport ministry for SSW acceptance. They must pay you at least what a Japanese mechanic with similar skills would earn, explain your contract in a language you understand and provide support for your daily life in Japan, either themselves or through a registered support organisation.

These conditions help ensure you work in a proper, regulated workshop rather than an informal setup.

Indicative Pay for Mechanics

Pay depends on location, the size of the workshop, your qualifications and overtime. Dealership workshops and larger service companies may pay more than small independent garages. Rough, indicative monthly gross ranges, with INR at about ₹0.57 per yen:

  • SSW (i), new arrival: about ¥180,000 – ¥230,000 (₹1.03 – ₹1.31 lakh)
  • SSW (i) with Grade 3 qualification: about ¥200,000 – ¥260,000 (₹1.14 – ₹1.48 lakh)
  • SSW (ii) or Grade 2 mechanic: about ¥240,000 – ¥320,000 (₹1.37 – ₹1.82 lakh)

Many workshops also pay bonuses and qualification allowances. Figures vary by employer, prefecture and experience, and tax, social insurance and rent reduce take-home pay.

Learning the Language of the Workshop

Workshop Japanese is a mix of everyday speech, technical terms and English loanwords written in katakana. Words like “burēki” (brake), “taiya” (tyre) and “enjin” (engine) will be easy, but you also need to read service manuals, inspection forms and warning labels. Kanji for parts and procedures appear often in official records.

Start building a personal vocabulary list of vehicle parts and tools in Japanese while you study for N4. Once in Japan, ask senior mechanics to explain terms and write them down. Steady improvement in Japanese is the key to passing the mechanic grade exams, which are conducted in Japanese.

A Preparation Roadmap from India

  1. Strengthen your hands-on skills at a workshop or service centre if you are not already working in one.
  2. Study Japanese for six to ten months to reach N4 or JFT-Basic level.
  3. Use the official study material for the automobile skills test and practise sample questions.
  4. Gather certificates, ITI or diploma mark sheets and experience letters that clearly describe your work.
  5. After passing the tests, seek employer matching only through registered agencies and official channels.

Moving Up to SSW (ii)

Automobile repair and maintenance is among the fields where SSW (ii) is available. To move up, you generally need to pass a higher-level evaluation or hold an advanced mechanic qualification such as Grade 2, along with practical experience in a workshop. Requirements can be revised, so confirm them when you plan your upgrade. SSW (ii) removes the five-year cap, allows your spouse and children to join you, and can support an eventual application for permanent residence if other conditions are met.

Driving and Daily Life

Mechanics sometimes need to move vehicles within the workshop or on nearby roads. To drive on public roads you need a valid Japanese driving licence or a licence that is accepted in Japan, so ask your employer what is required and follow the official conversion or testing procedure. Many workshops are in suburban or semi-rural areas, so commuting by bicycle or company transport is common. Living costs outside the big cities are moderate, and many Indian mechanics manage to save a good share of their pay.

Watch Out for Misleading Offers

Be careful with agents who promise “garage jobs in Japan” without any tests, or who ask for big upfront payments for visa processing. SSW automobile jobs require passing the skills and language tests, and the employer must be a certified repair business. Keep your passport, read every document and verify field rules and test schedules on official sources such as the Immigration Services Agency of Japan, the transport ministry and the Japanese embassy in India.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I work on bikes or two-wheelers in Japan?

The field covers motor vehicles generally, but most SSW jobs are in car and truck workshops. Check the specific job description with the employer.

Is body painting or denting included?

The main focus is inspection and maintenance. Body and paint work may be possible as related tasks in some workshops, but it should not become your main job on this status.

Do I need the Grade 3 mechanic exam before going?

No. Most candidates pass the SSW skills test and then study for Grade 3 after arriving in Japan.

Can I bring my family?

Not on SSW (i). Family members can usually join once you move to SSW (ii).

Are EV skills important in Japan?

Hybrids are very common and EVs are growing, so electrical and diagnostic skills are increasingly valuable.

Gearing Up for Japan

For Indian mechanics, Japan offers regulated workplaces, fair pay rules and a clear qualification ladder. Combine your workshop skills with steady Japanese study, and automobile maintenance can become a long and rewarding career abroad.
