IT and Software Jobs in Japan for Indian Engineers

By IshanSeptember 15, 2026Updated:October 3, 202608 Mins Read

Japan’s technology sector has a well-known problem: it does not have enough software engineers. Government and industry studies have warned for years of a large shortfall in IT talent, as banks, manufacturers, retailers and public bodies race to modernise old systems and move to the cloud. Indian engineers, with strong English and solid technical training, are increasingly part of the answer.

Unlike blue-collar routes to Japan, IT jobs do not run through the Specified Skilled Worker system. Instead, most Indian developers go on a professional work visa linked to their degree or experience, and some qualify for a points-based fast-track status. Japanese language is not always mandatory, but it shapes which jobs you can get and how far you can grow.

Here is a practical look at how Indian engineers land IT jobs in Japan, what employers look for, what salaries look like and how to prepare from India.

Where Indian Engineers Fit in Japan’s Tech Market

Japanese IT work broadly falls into three types of employer. First, global tech companies and startups in Tokyo that use English as their working language. Second, large Japanese corporations and system integrators that build and maintain systems for banks, insurers, manufacturers and government. Third, Indian and other foreign IT service firms that serve Japanese clients, often with mixed teams in Japan and India.

English-first companies are the easiest entry for engineers without Japanese, but they are also the most competitive. Traditional Japanese firms offer stability and large projects but usually expect Japanese for meetings, documentation and client communication. Service firms sit in the middle and often value people who can bridge Indian development teams and Japanese clients.

Roles in Demand

  • Backend and full-stack developers – Java, Python, Go, Node.js, TypeScript and modern frameworks
  • Cloud and DevOps engineers – AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, Kubernetes and infrastructure automation
  • Data engineers and machine learning specialists – especially in fintech, e-commerce and manufacturing analytics
  • Mobile developers – iOS and Android, important for Japan’s app-heavy consumer market
  • QA and test automation engineers – Japanese clients place great weight on quality
  • Bridge system engineers – bilingual engineers who coordinate between Japanese clients and offshore teams
  • SAP and ERP consultants – for large companies upgrading legacy enterprise systems

The Visa: Engineer / Specialist in Humanities / International Services

Most foreign IT professionals work on this status. The key requirement is that your job relates to your education or experience. A B.Tech, BCA, MCA, B.Sc. in computer science or similar degree usually satisfies this for developer roles. Candidates without a related degree may qualify through around ten years of relevant work experience, though this is harder to document.

The employer applies to immigration in Japan for your Certificate of Eligibility. Once it is issued, you apply for the visa at the Japanese embassy or a consulate in India. Your period of stay is usually granted for one, three or five years and can be renewed. Your spouse and children can join you on dependent status.

Highly Skilled Professional status

Japan also runs a points-based Highly Skilled Professional system. Points are given for academic background, salary, work experience, age, Japanese ability and other factors. Reaching the required score brings benefits such as a longer period of stay, easier family arrangements and a shorter route to permanent residence. Experienced engineers with good salaries and a master’s degree often qualify, so it is worth calculating your points once you have an offer.

Indicative IT Salaries in Japan

Salaries in Japan are often quoted as annual figures, and many companies pay bonuses on top. The figures below are rough, indicative ranges for Tokyo, before tax and social insurance, with INR at about ₹0.57 per yen. Pay varies widely by company type, skills, Japanese level and city.

Experience level Indicative annual pay (JPY) Approx. INR per year
Fresher / 0–2 years ¥3.5 – ¥5 million ₹20 – ₹28.5 lakh
Mid-level / 3–6 years ¥5 – ¥8 million ₹28.5 – ₹45.6 lakh
Senior / lead / 7+ years ¥8 – ¥12 million ₹45.6 – ₹68.4 lakh
Bilingual bridge SE (N2+) ¥5.5 – ¥9 million ₹31.4 – ₹51.3 lakh

The pay figures above for IT jobs in Japan for Indians are indicative ranges drawn from commonly reported wages, not a quote from any employer. Actual pay varies with experience, city and exchange rates, so confirm the current amount with the employer or through the Specified Skilled Worker Support Website link under Helpful Links.

The INR figure looks large, but remember that Tokyo rent, transport and food cost much more than in Bengaluru or Pune. A one-room apartment in central Tokyo can easily cost ¥80,000 to ¥120,000 a month, while suburbs further out are cheaper.

How Much Japanese Do You Need?

For English-first companies, you can start without Japanese, though basic daily-life Japanese makes living much easier. For most other roles, the guide is roughly:

  • N4–N3: helpful for daily life and some team interaction; opens doors at service firms
  • N2: the level many Japanese companies ask for; you can read documents and join meetings
  • N1: excellent; makes you competitive for client-facing and leadership roles

Engineers who reach N2 often see a clear jump in job options and pay, because the market for bilingual technical talent is small.

Ways Indian Engineers Find Jobs in Japan

  1. Internal transfer – join an Indian or global IT firm with Japanese clients and move onsite. This is one of the most common routes.
  2. Campus hiring – some Japanese companies recruit directly from top Indian engineering colleges.
  3. Online job platforms – English-language job boards and professional networks list roles in Japan, especially in Tokyo.
  4. Specialist recruiters – bilingual recruitment firms place foreign engineers; genuine ones are paid by the employer, not by you.
  5. Study first – a master’s degree at a Japanese university or a language school followed by job hunting in Japan.

Taxes, Pension and Take-Home Pay

As an employee in Japan, you join the country’s social insurance system. Each month, your employer deducts health insurance, employee pension, employment insurance and income tax. From your second year, you also pay resident tax, which is based on the previous year’s income. Together, these deductions commonly take around 20 to 30 percent of gross pay, depending on salary level and city.

India and Japan have a social security agreement that can help avoid paying into both countries’ pension systems for short assignments and allows periods of coverage to be considered together in some cases. If you are on deputation from an Indian employer, ask HR how this applies to you, and check with EPFO for the Indian side. Foreigners who leave Japan may also be able to claim a lump-sum withdrawal payment of part of their Japanese pension contributions, subject to conditions.

Life as an Indian Engineer in Japan

Tokyo, Yokohama, Osaka and Nagoya have the largest tech job markets, and Tokyo in particular has a sizeable Indian community, with Indian grocery stores, restaurants and temples in several neighbourhoods. Public transport is excellent, streets are safe and healthcare is good. On the other hand, housing contracts can be strict for foreigners, apartments are small, and initial moving costs, such as deposits and agency fees, can add up to several months’ rent. Many engineers start in company-arranged or furnished housing before finding their own place.

What Japanese Employers Look For

Technical skill matters, but Japanese companies also judge reliability and fit. They value careful documentation, punctuality, clear reporting of problems early rather than late, and respect for team processes. Interviews may include coding tests, system design discussions and questions about how you handle mistakes. Showing you have researched Japanese work culture and are committed to staying for a reasonable period makes a strong impression.

Practical Steps to Prepare from India

  • Build a portfolio on code-hosting platforms with real projects, not just tutorials.
  • Earn recognised cloud certifications if you target DevOps or cloud roles.
  • Start Japanese now, aiming for N4 within a year and N3 or N2 after that.
  • Prepare a Japanese-style resume format if applying to traditional firms.
  • Get your degree certificates and experience letters ready in clean, verifiable form.

Before you accept any offer, double-check visa details and employer information through official sources such as the Immigration Services Agency of Japan and the Japanese embassy in India.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I work in Japan as a software engineer without Japanese?

Yes, at some English-first companies and global firms. However, Japanese widens your options significantly and helps in daily life.

Do I need a computer science degree?

A related degree makes the visa straightforward. Without one, long documented experience may work, but it is harder.

Is the Highly Skilled Professional visa hard to get?

It depends on your points. Experienced engineers with good pay and a postgraduate degree often qualify.

Can my family join me?

Yes. Spouses and children can generally join engineers on dependent status.

Are IT salaries in Japan higher than in India?

In rupee terms, usually yes, but living costs in Tokyo are also much higher, so compare savings, not just salary.

Is Japan the Right Move for You?

For Indian engineers who enjoy structured work, value safety and quality of life, and are willing to learn Japanese over time, Japan can be an excellent career move. Start with your skills, add language steadily, and choose employers carefully.
